The Occurrence of Intra- and Sub-Retinal Fluid in Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy: Pathogenesis, Prognosis and Treatment

The article titled “The Occurrence of Intra- and Sub-Retinal Fluid in Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy: Pathogenesis, Prognosis and Treatment” by Anne Catherine Chapelle et al., published in Ophthalmology in 2023, discusses the presence of intra- and sub-retinal fluid in non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAAION) patients. The study involved a retrospective analysis of ۳۲ NAAION patients’ medical records. The occurrence and characteristics of retinal fluid were examined using Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scans.

In ۴۶.۷% of eyes, retinal fluid was observed, with specific patterns of optic disc swelling associated with the distribution of retinal edema. Visual acuity, field loss, and foveal thresholds remained stable during the observation period. The study found no significant difference in visual function between patients treated with corticosteroids and those who were not.

The presence of subretinal fluid did not influence visual recovery or tissue edema resorption. The study suggests that the volume of transudate at the optic disc might be crucial, differing from primary retinal disorders in terms of pathogenesis.
