What they found:

  • Pressure fluctuation, in general, wasn’t directly linked to vision loss. This means how much pressure changes throughout the day or over months doesn’t seem to directly impact glaucoma progression.
  • Other aspects of pressure were more important. This includes average pressure and peak pressure (highest pressure measured). These were linked to vision loss, suggesting they might be better indicators for gauging disease progression.
  • One specific measure, called “ocular pulse amplitude,” might be linked to faster vision loss. This needs further investigation, but it could be a potential future target for monitoring glaucoma.

What it means:

  • Current methods for measuring pressure fluctuation in clinics might not be helpful for predicting glaucoma progression.
  • Focusing on average and peak pressure could be more valuable for managing glaucoma.
  • More research is needed on “ocular pulse amplitude” to see if it’s truly a useful marker for the disease.
